James Densmore promoted the original development of the typewriter, funding Sholes with money from his oil business. He and Sholes decided on the QWERTY keyboard layout that first appeared in US Patent 207559, and according to page 69 of the book, The Typewriter and the Men Who Made It, by Richard Current, James Densmore coined the original word "typewriter."
